Done Mother!

One of the bittersweet things about your children getting older are those words that they never used to be able to pronounce properly now being pronounced exactly as they should.
I will always miss the words cuggoowe (cuddle me) eweven (eleven) beweieve (believe) and wenembwa (remember). And many more to be fair.
And of course the change from mama, to mummy, to mum…I never hit the mum stage. Mine went from mummy to mother. This actually started as a joke between the boys but has now stuck and actually it’s actually a lot easier when we go out somewhere and I hear children calling “mum” and know it’s definitely not my children calling me.

I got to a point last year when I thought all these little things were now over.
I’m mother.
They pronounce words correctly (most of the time).
That’s it.
They’re teenagers and we’re over the cute stage.

Until I realised something yesterday.
“Done Mother”
Something my boys always call out to me when they’ve completed something I’ve asked them to do.
Shower completed - “Done Mother”
Washing up completed - “Done Mother”
Drying up completed - “Done Mother”
Teeth brushed - “Done Mother”
Cats fed - “Done Mother”

It’s their standard response after every task complete. Like crossing it off a to do list.

It made me realise that these moments may never be over.
These moments replace the wrongly pronounced words.
There’s always something else to come.
It also made me really appreciate these little things that seem standard now, that are part of our everyday that one day will stop.
When they move away from home and no longer need to tell me the task is complete.
And rather than feel sad about it I can now treasure it and actually look forward to what is going to come next.

“Done Mother”.
